    Notable Features:
This necklace was handmade during the Art Deco era. Composed of 14k rose gold and 1/20 12k rose gold filled over base metal, the necklace features a beautiful locket with chased and repousse designs. The design of this piece
is an excellent example of the styles of jewelry popular during the Art Deco era, which saw wealthy socialites and aristocrats donning bold, eye-catching jewelry to wear to Gatsby-style parties and formal events. Jewelry worn during this time period was created to make a statement and draw attention to the wearer, and this necklace would have been no exception.
The locket showcases a lovely round face with a series of floral and swirling foliate designs. Each of these designs were hand-chased using a small etching tool into the locket's face. Surrounding the round face is lovely scroll and floral motif, each containing a raised appearance achieved using the repousse metalworking technique to hand-hammer the rose gold from the opposite side. The back of the locket opens via a small hinge at the side to reveal two compartments with one covered by protective glass, perfect for holding a photo or other small memento. This side of the locket also showcases geometric, engine-turned designs which were all the rage during this time period.
The pendant is completed with a standard articulated bale, which is able to be moved back and forth. This locket was strung on a 1/20 12k rose gold filled over base metal Prince of Wales link chain, with some of the links containing a fancy textured surface. When worn, the necklace dangles down the chest with the pendant resting just at the bustline on most people. The generous use of 14k rose gold in the locket gives it an impressive item weight value of 5.
A classic example of Gatsby-style jewelry from the Art Deco era, this necklace would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection.
Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history.
    Damage:
Age appropriate wear. There is minor patina to the rose gold locket, which does not affect wear. There is also minor wear to the gold filled over base metal, as well as oxidation, on the chain in some areas, which is not immediately noticeable when worn.

    The History
The Art Deco era is famous for being the "Gatsby" or "Roaring Twenties" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand.
Chasing is a metalworking technique that uses a nail-like tool and hammer to hand etch patterns onto a metal surface. This process creates a design that is sunk into the front of the surface using indentations, grooves, and channels. Chasing is thousands of years old and was a very difficult and time-consuming technique that is still used by metalsmiths today.
Repoussé began as an ancient metalworking technique dating as far back as the 3rd century BC, involving malleable metal that was hammered onto the reverse side to create an image on the front. Examples are found all over the world; Greece, Egypt, and even the Hopewell periods in the American southeast. Reverse side hammering was also used to add detail to the front, creating intricate patterns using grooves, indentations, and channeling. The piece was then carefully polished to create a hollow, eye-catching treasure.
