    Description

    Johnny "The Needle" Pesky (1919-2012) was a left-handed hitting shortstop/3rd baseman, who led the A.L. in hits in his 1st 3 seasons in the majors for the Red Sox (1942 & 1946-1947-serving in the Navy during WW II-1943-1945). He played 10 seasons in the majors for the Red Sox (1942 & 1946-1952), Tigers 91952-1954), and Senators (1954), playing in 1270 games, hitting .307, with 1455 hits, 17 HRs, and 404 RBIs. His best season was 1946, helping the Red Sox win the pennant, hitting a career high .335, with 2 HRs, 55 RBIs, career high & league leading 208 hits, made the Alol-Star team and finished 4th in MVP. In the W.S., he played in all 7 games (Red Sox lost to the Cardinals 4 games to 3), hitting .233. After his playing days, he managed the Red Sox (1963-1964-record-147-179), coached for the Pirates (1965-1967), was Red Sox broadcaster (1969-1974), Red Sox coach (1975-1984-interim manager in 1980-record 1-4), and coach for Red Sox (1995). His #6 was retired by the Red Sox in 2008, and is a member of the Red Sox HOF.
