The size of the order between the opposite vertexes of the star is 47-50 mm (depending on the year of issue). The distance from the center of the order to the top of any of the five enamel rays of the star is 26-27 mm.

The Order of the Red Star was awarded:
For personal courage and bravery in battle, excellent organization and skilful leadership of combat operations that contributed to the success of the Soviet troops;
For successful combat operations of military units and formations, as a result of which the enemy was inflicted significant damage;
For services to ensuring State security and inviolability of the State border of the USSR;
For courage and bravery shown in the performance of military or official duty, in conditions involving the risk of life;
For exemplary performance of special command tasks and other feats performed in peacetime;
For great services in maintaining high combat readiness of the troops, excellent performance in combat and political training, mastering new military equipment and other services in strengthening the defense power of the USSR;
For services to the development of military science and technology, training for the Armed Forces of the USSR;
For services to strengthening the defense capabilities of the States of the Socialist Commonwealth.
In the period from June 4, 1944 to September 14, 1957, the Order of the Red Star was awarded for 15 years of service in the ranks of the Red Army, Navy, internal affairs bodies and state security. The Order of the Red Star was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the CEC of the USSR on April 6, 1930. The statute of the Order was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the CEC of the USSR of May 5, 1930.
