Catherine II established the highest officer's order of the Russian army - the Order of the Holy Great Martyr and Victorious George. The project of the order was developed by the hero of the Seven Years War, Count Z.G. Chernyshev. According to the status, the St. George Cross was intended to reward military ranks "for bravery, jealousy and zeal for military service and for encouragement in the art of war" and went in importance immediately after the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called.
