    Description

    Solomon "Solly" Hemus (1923-2017) was a left-handed hitting shortstop/2nd baseman, and player/manager, manager, who played 11 seasons in the majors for the Cardinals (1949-1956& 1959), and Phillies (1956-1958). Primarily a shortstop, Hemus played in 961 games, hitting .273, with 51 HRs, and 263 RBIs. He had his best season in 1952, hitting .268, with 15 HRs, 52 RBIs, and led the league with 105 runs scored, and 20 HBP. He led the league 3-times in HBP. Hemus was player/manager of the Cardinals (1959), and manager of the Cardinals (1960-1961), compiling a record of 190-192. He then coached for the Mets (1962-1963), and Indians (1964-1965). At the time of his death in 2017 at age 94, Hemus was the last man alive to have managed in the 50's.
